He may have sealed an early championship title – but that has done little to quench Linus Lundqvist’s thirst for success. Quite the opposite, in fact, with the newly-crowned champion wowing to bow out in style as Formula Regional Americas draws to a close this weekend in Texas.
Lundqvist put the title out of reach of his opponents with yet another victorious performance last time out at Homestead Miami Speedway, winning twice before ultimately sealing the deal with a controlled run to second place in the final race of the meeting.
With 12 wins from 14 races so far in 2020, Lundqvist has been the leading light throughout a record-shattering rookie campaign on U.S. soil – and heading into the season finale at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas, the Swede is hungry for more.
“It’s great to have sealed the title prematurely, and it does put me in a more comfortable position with less pressure this weekend,” says Linus Lundqvist. “That, however, does not mean for a second that I’m planning to hold back! I want to finish this season off in the best way possible, both for myself and for my team, and the target is clearly to win more races.”
Playing host to the season-finale is U.S. Formula 1 Grand Prix venue Circuit of the Americas, commonly abbreviated as COTA. With Lundqvist having never sat foot at the Texan track, the Global Racing Group driver is keen for his first taste of the ultra-modern facility.
“COTA looks like a lot of fun, and I think it’s the ideal place for our grand finale,” Linus Lundqvist reflects. “It’s the one track on the calendar that reminds me the most of the European circuits. It has wide run-off areas, an interesting mix of corners, and is very modern in style. I’m looking forward to going to battle for a final time this year with all the guys and girls in the team.”
Bidding to eradicate yet another record, Lundqvist will be taking an extra keen interest in the outcome of qualifying this weekend.
Having led the way in each of the preceding five qualifying sessions this season, Lundqvist is on course to become the first driver to sweep arguably the purest performance column of them all: the one charting outright one-lap pace.
Practice for the 2020 Formula Regional Americas finale gets underway on Friday. Lundqvist’s qualifying record hunt takes center stage on Saturday, followed by the first race of the weekend. Races two and three are staged on Sunday.
