HMD Motorsports Moves to FR Americas Championship Powered by Honda for 2020 Season

Team focused on return to Road to Indy and Indy Lights in 2021

With the recent cancellation of the 2020 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship, HMD Motorsports has been forced to reconsider their season plans. After taking a few days to evaluate all of their options, the team has decided to enter the Formula Regional Americas Championship Powered by Honda for the entirety of the 2020 season and make a run at the series championship.

As with every other form of motorsports, FR Americas has been forced to alter their season schedule due to COVID-19, but the series has remained committed to running a full season. FR Americas will travel alongside the Formula 4 United States Championship for the entirety of the season.

With two Ligier JS F3 chassis already in their possession, the team is excited to enter current HMD Motorsports drivers, David Malukas and Santiago Urrutia. Both drivers will be competing in all sixteen rounds (six race weekends) of the championship and will be vying for the Championship and the Honda Performance Development Indy Lights Scholarship - which will enable the Champion to compete in an entire Indy Lights season the following season.

"As they say there is a bright side to everything and with the cancellation of the Indy Lights 2020 season, I'm glad to able to continue racing this year in the FR America series," said Malukas. "It's always nice

to get into a car that you've never driven in before and to also compete in a new series. I am gutted about the Indy Lights season being cancelled as the team and I have worked hard and were looking forward to the year, but with everything happening in the world right now, safety is the number one priority and I am lucky to have to opportunity to continue racing."

HMD Motorsports is committed to remaining at the front of the field and returning to Indy Lights in 2021 as a top contender. Forming during the latter half of the 2019 season, HMD Motorsports is devoted to growing as a team and expanding their program - which now includes entries in FR Americas. By entering the series, HMD Motorsports will be able to keep their shop doors open and retain their staff in an effort to continue building on the team's resumé.

"We need to see what the season brings," explained Henry Malukas. "If it makes sense, we will continue in 2021 and push for championships with a pair of new drivers. All the wheels are in motion to possibly compete in multiple series again in 2021."

Taking the year to learn on new tracks and in a new chassis will help both the team and drivers enhance their driving ability to make them more rounded drivers. The team will remain focused on building a high-caliber operation and will come back to the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship as a powerhouse team with more experience and knowledge.  HMD Motorsports is excited to take on the challenge on entering a new series and looks forward to starting the 2020 season!
